The Black Run Race 2011

Aston Hill Black Run Race

In its 14th incarnation, the gain of an hour over Saturday night didn’t appear to discourage riders from coming to race Aston Hill’s Black Run on the 27th March. Year on year the race has gained in popularity, and 2011 was no exception with riders from as far afield as Yorkshire rubbing shoulders with locals, some even braving the near freezing March temperatures camping overnight to ensure an early start. 261 made it to the race (after a few unfortunate pull-outs leading up to the event) which meant that the field was very nearly full and provided the base for a great day of racing.

It’s been a dry week. The sun is shining outside. And you know what? It’s looking pretty special for the weekend!

(After the recent weather, do you have any idea how nice it is to say that?)

As you no doubt know, it’s the Black Run Race this weekend. It will affect opening, so have a read through here to get an idea of what’s going on.

If it’s your first time riding at Aston Hill read the essentials and the frequently asked questions - they answer most questions about the park.

And you know, if there’s any tune that’s guaranteed to get anyone over 25 going fast this weekend, then this has to be it. Start your engines!

Abarth shield

In true furious Italian racing style with a glorious last minute dash to the finish, Abarth UK have come on-board as a last minute supporter of the Black Run Race. They issued the following statement earlier:

Abarth Cars UK, famous for the iconic Abarth 500, is supporting the Black Run Race this weekend, adding a touch of Italian flare to the event. Abarth have stepped up to the mark, and have provided some great race prizes to complement the event, and will be putting on a great show, both on and off the race track in addition to their association with the new, Speedsport Cycles run; Team Abarth MTB.

There’ll be an Abarth Cars UK display, including an Abarth Grande Punto Evo and Abarth 500, free mini flags and a whole host of other visual treats at the event.

Ivan Gibson, Brand Responsible for Abarth Cars UK, added; “ We are proud to be a part of the Aston Hill Black Run Mountain Bike event and would like to thank the organisers and event team for providing this opportunity. It is the perfect opportunity to announce our association with the Speedsport Cycles team and riders, Olie Burton, John Holbrook and Michael O’Brien. We wish Team Abarth MTB and the event all success for the weekend.”

Look out for them in the pits opposite the sign-on tent!

Weather update for weekend 19th March

Mar
Comments Off   Posted by Neil |  Category:Weather and conditions

Saturday is looking finer, but maybe a bit damp in the more sheltered spots after light rain today and freezing temps tonight.

This weekend is the first race of the British Downhill Series, but the last that you can practice before the Black Run Race here at the Hill on 27th March (fear not - next Saturday will be open as usual for practice as well).

The BBC and Metcheck are both saying it’s going to be fairly warm; tomorrow is looking particularly rad - if sunny skies make you feel good, then Saturday is the one!

Sunday is potentially a light drizzly one, but if Saturday plans out as predicted and the trails are good and dry, then it should be very, very rideable. BOOM!

First time riding at Aston Hill? Then read the essentials and the frequently asked questions – when wet, clay, chalk, flint and wet roots make Aston Hill a very different animal. The boardwalk at the bottom of the Red Run is particularly slippery when your tyres are covered with a layer of mud.

Go on - get out and feed this addiction!

Weather update for weekend 12th March

Saturday’s for riding, Sunday’s for digging.

The BBC and Metcheck are both saying it’s going to be fairly warm. It’s also been reasonably dry and breezy for the past few days, so even though it was pretty claggy on the sheltered runs earlier in the week, it’s hopeful that things will be drying out nicely.

At the time of writing Metcheck are forecasting light rain Sunday; no bad thing as it’s the final Back to the Future dig day happening on the 4X. Fancy helping out? Then read this and come along - you’ll be welcomed with open arms! Sound good? Excellent!

(If you are riding Sunday morning please be aware that the bottom of the 4X will be shut.)

Stay safe, be good and get back to the future!

Weather update for weekend 5th March

Mar

It’s looking promising…

The BBC and Metcheck are predicting the sun to shine - maybe with a hint of drizzle Saturday - but temperatures are forecast to be cold, especially out of the sun. Sunday looks to be the brighter and better day of the two - here’s hoping the the weather holds!

Regarding conditions, it’s still damp with plenty of roost, but it isn’t particularly claggy and will hopefully dry out some more if Saturday’s drizzle isn’t too bad. Don’t go changing tyres to anything slick just yet, but this could just be the best weekend we’ve had in a while.

If it’s your first time riding at Aston Hill read the essentials and the frequently asked questions – this time of year clay, chalk and wet roots make Aston Hill a very different animal. The boardwalk at the bottom of the Red Run is particularly difficult when covered with a layer of mud.

Yeah, I know - it was getting close to the edge. Get out while the sun is shining!
